How is net salary calculated from gross salary in Egypt in 2026?

Net salary in Egypt equals gross salary minus three employee-side deductions: social insurance (11% of the insurable wage), salary income tax (progressive brackets after a EGP 20,000 annual personal exemption), and the Martyrs & Victims Fund contribution (0.05% of gross). For example, a gross salary of EGP 20,000 per month in 2026 produces deductions of EGP 1,837 insurance, EGP 2,445 tax and EGP 10 Martyrs Fund - a net take-home of EGP 15,708.

What are Egypt's social insurance rates and wage limits for 2026?

From 1 January 2026, as announced by the National Organization for Social Insurance (NOSI):

  • Minimum insurable wage: EGP 2,700 per month

  • Maximum insurable wage: EGP 16,700 per month

  • Employee share: 11% of the insurable wage

  • Employer share: 18.75% of the insurable wage

  • Labor Emergency Fund: 1% of the insurable wage (paid by the employer)

  • Martyrs & Victims Fund: 0.05% of gross salary (withheld from the employee)

Both limits rise by 15% every January under Law 148 of 2019.

Why is my social insurance fixed at EGP 1,837 even though my salary is higher?

Because contributions are calculated on the insurable wage, which is capped at EGP 16,700 in 2026 - so the employee share can never exceed 11% x 16,700 = EGP 1,837.00 per month. Whether you earn EGP 20,000 or EGP 200,000, your insurance deduction is the same. The employer share is likewise capped at EGP 3,131.25 (18.75% x 16,700).

What is the Labor Emergency Fund - and why do some calculators show EGP 27 instead of EGP 167?

The Labor Emergency Fund (Law 156 of 2002) is an employer-paid contribution equal to 1% of the employee's insurable wage; it is never deducted from the employee's salary. For any salary at or above the 2026 ceiling, the correct amount is 1% x EGP 16,700 = EGP 167.00 per month. Calculators that show EGP 27 are applying the 1% to the minimum insurable wage (EGP 2,700) or to outdated wage limits - which understates the true employer cost. For a salary below the ceiling, say EGP 10,000, the fund is simply EGP 100.

What are Egypt's salary tax brackets for 2026?

Salary tax is charged on annual net income (gross pay minus employee social insurance, minus the EGP 20,000 personal exemption) using progressive brackets:

  • EGP 0 to 40,000: 0%

  • EGP 40,001 to 55,000: 10%

  • EGP 55,001 to 70,000: 15%

  • EGP 70,001 to 200,000: 20%

  • EGP 200,001 to 400,000: 22.5%

  • EGP 400,001 to 600,000: 25%

For higher incomes, the law removes the lower brackets step by step: above EGP 600,000 annual net income the 0% bracket disappears, and once income exceeds EGP 1,200,000 the entire first 1,200,000 is taxed at 25% with the excess at 27.5%. Official practice also rounds annual taxable income down to the nearest EGP 10 before applying the brackets - the Tawzef calculator follows both rules exactly.

Which salary additions are taxable in Egypt?

Most cash additions are taxable: performance bonuses, attendance bonuses, commissions, overtime, incentives, profit share and most allowances all enter the salary tax base. Genuine reimbursements of documented business expenses (for example, travel reimbursement with receipts) are not income and can be paid tax-free. In the Tawzef calculator, the Taxable toggle on each addition controls exactly this - switch it off only for items that are truly exempt.

What is the difference between deductible and non-deductible deductions?

A deductible (pre-tax) deduction reduces your taxable income before salary tax is calculated; a non-deductible (post-tax) deduction is taken from your net pay and does not reduce your tax. Most everyday deductions - loan installments, salary advances, penalties - are non-deductible: you owe the money, but it does not lower your tax bill.

How much does an employee actually cost an employer in Egypt in 2026?

Total employer cost equals gross salary plus the employer's social insurance share (18.75% of insurable wage) plus the Labor Emergency Fund (1% of insurable wage). For a gross salary of EGP 20,000 in 2026: 20,000 + 3,131.25 + 167.00 = EGP 23,298.25 per month. Because both employer items are capped at the EGP 16,700 insurable wage, the gap between gross salary and total cost is at most EGP 3,298.25 per month regardless of how high the salary is.

Do consultants pay social insurance in Egypt?

Consultants engaged outside the social insurance system pay no employee or employer insurance contributions - salary tax is applied to the full fee instead, and the employer cost equals the gross amount. The Tawzef calculator has a dedicated Consultant role that models this. Note that independent contractors invoicing through their own tax file may be subject to different treatment, such as withholding tax on professional fees.
